A number of years ago I remember seeing a TV clip of Neil Young
singing a song, using a very un-"Neil Young like" voice and approach.
It occurred to me at that time that:
a. he actually had a really good and pleasing voice if he chose to
sing in that manner but that
b. he usually was making a conscious decision to sing distinctively to
fit how he thought the song should sound and perhaps most importantly
c. singing in a way to differentiate himself from others by creating
an easily identifiable sound for commercial purposes. Could be true of
his harmonica playing as well.
